Preparing Your Sweetwater Home for Day One

Once your move to Sweetwater officially begins, the first thing you'll want is a home that's completely ready from the moment you walk through the door.

Turn on the electricity by visiting the Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) website to create or log in to your account and request service for your Sweetwater address. 

New customers will provide their Social Security number, Driver's License Number, Social Insurance number, or Tax ID number, along with their address and preferred connection date. 

On the other hand, existing FPL users should confirm their disconnection date at the old address, reconnection date, and complete the Sweetwater service address, with a minimum deposit of $25, including setup fees.

If you use natural gas, check availability with Florida City Gas (FCG), since some homes near Sweetwater may not fall within their service area. 

Like with electricity, new customers must submit their ID and connection date, while existing customers can provide their disconnection date, complete their Sweetwater address, and preferred transfer date. 

Deposit amounts may vary based on square footage or reflect twice an average monthly bill, along with a connection fee that might be charged before service begins.

Lastly, for water and sewer, check coverage through the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department website. 

Create an online account and settle the $50 water deposit, $50 sewer deposit, and $45 non-refundable connection fee, and if you are already an existing homeowner, pay any outstanding balances before transferring service to the new address.

Earning Your Florida Freedom Card (A.K.A Driver's License)

A new home in Sweetwater comes with its own little milestones, and getting your Florida driver's license is one of them. 

Tiny as it seems, it's a card that unlocks almost everything you need, from errands and subscriptions to paperwork, registrations, and the everyday tasks that come with settling into a new city.

Oh, and it also isn't optional. 

Florida requires new residents to secure a driver's license within 30 days of establishing residency, and you'll need it if you plan to get behind the wheel anywhere in the state. 

Luckily, the process is far from complicated.

If you're moving to Sweetwater without a Florida license, visit the nearest Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or any local office that handles driver's license services. 

Once there, submit the documents required for your residency category:

•    Immigrant
•    Non-Immigrant
•    Canadian

The standard Florida Class E license costs $48, the commercial Class A license is $75, and an ID card costs $25.

You'll still need to pass the Vision and Hearing test, which applies to all new license holders.

Meanwhile, existing Florida license holders only need to notify the DMV of their new Sweetwater address to receive an updated card — state law requires current information, people! 

And if you're bringing a vehicle with you, don't forget to secure insurance so you can title and register it within 10 days of establishing residency.
