Spend the rest of your days wrapped in the unassuming allure of Shenandoah, an integral part of Magic City's Little Havana merging history, rich cultural tapestry, and the Metro's world-class amenities — a quaint urban refuge seemingly cut right out of a FAIRYTALE!

Welcome to a neighborhood with a "heart," Shenandoah, a tiny Little Havana community geographically central and high and dry on a ridge, bordered by Calle Ocho to the north, Coral Way to the south, SW 12th Ave to the east, and SW 27th Ave to the west

A focal point for locals who prefer living in the city sans the buzz of tourists, Shenandoah, albeit residential in itself, boasts convenient proximity to famous communities like Miami Beach, Coconut Grove, Brickell, and Downtown Miami, allowing anyone easy access to the BEST of Miamibeaches, 24/7 nightlife, lush parks, vibrant tourist spots, entertainment, and everything in between!

Meanwhile, within its perimeters, Shenandoah offers a rich inventory of Mediterranean-styled homes harkening to the 1920s alongside a bustling thoroughfare, Calle Ocho, where you'll find the center of Cuban life and culture highlighted by authentic Cuban restaurants, popular vanitas, warm and toasty Cuban bakeries, and street festivals!

With its unique urban-suburban ambiance, Shenandoah, though far from a popular tourist destination, has become a select urban refuge for Miamians, one brimming with developments and projects to enhance its residents' quality of life!

So, if you've already started immersing into this unpretentious residential paradise, let this guide help you achieve a painless and stress-free relocation to Shenandoah to enjoy that PERFECT balance of city living and a tightly-knit community in no time!

Here are 7 things you need to do IMMEDIATELY when moving to Shenandoah.

(1)

Activating The HEART Of Your Shenandoah Home: Sorting Out Your Utilities In Shenandoah

Starting a new chapter in the charming community of Shenandoah?

To get the ball rolling, set up the "heart" of your new Shenandoah home — your utilities!

And don't worry — since you're minutes from the center of Miami, sorting out your home essentials will be a piece of cake!

To hook up to electricity, create or log in to your existing account at the Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) website and apply for service at your new address.

New customers will need to submit their Social Security, Driver's License, Social Insurance, or Tax ID number, the new service address, and the connection date, and existing FPL customers only need to advise disconnection date (old address), re-connection date,  and complete service address!

Also, a deposit of $25 (minimum) and other initial set-up fees may be charged upfront, whether you're a new or existing customer.

To start cooking inside your new Shenandoah home, set up your gas service with TECO Peoples Gas or Florida City Gas (FCG)

As soon as you've confirmed availability, submit the necessary IDs and connection date (new customer) or advise the disconnection date, the complete address of your new home, and your preferred service transfer date (existing customer).

Heads up — deposit fees may be based on your home's square footage or equal to twice the average monthly bill, and you may need to settle a connection fee before service starts.

Oh, and don't forget to check water and sewer availability on the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer website.

Once confirmed, new customers must create an online account and deposit $50 for water, $50 for sewer, and a non-refundable $45 connection fee, and existing owners must also settle any outstanding balance before service transfer.

Creating The Pathway To A Lifetime Of Connectivity: Subscribing To Internet And Cable TV In Shenandoah

Want to pair your thriving urban lifestyle with the unparalleled wonders of technology, a.k.a. high-speed internet connection and cable TV?

Don't shop just anywhere!

Seek premium plans and bundles from esteemed service providers like Comcast Xfinity and AT&T!

Once you've assessed your household's usage and entertainment needs, apply for new service by submitting your complete address and proper IDs online or in person at the nearest store, or if you're an existing Comcast or AT&T customer, request a service transfer as soon as you settle any remaining balance on your account!

It's also best to ask your provider if you need to settle deposits, activation/installation, and equipment rental fees upfront.

Otherwise, expect everything to reflect on your first bill.

Adjusting To The Floridian Norms: An ID That Gets Things DONE

Here's a pro tip from a licensed real estate agent— if you want to get your relocation sorted FAST, get a Florida driver's license!

You see, aside from being a REQUIREMENT within 30 days of establishing residency, a driver's license is one of the quickest IDs to secure in Florida.

And we all know how important having an ID is in getting "things" done!

Subscriptions, utilities, paperwork, documents, bills, and whatnot — everything you'll need to relocate to Florida needs an ID!

Not to mention that your Florida driver's license is also your "All-Access" pass if you want to drive around Florida without breaking the law!

So, if you don't have one yet, drop by the nearest Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or any local office offering driver's license services to submit the necessary documents for your Florida driver's license.

Click on the applicable residency status to know which documents to have on hand when you apply:

The initial Florida Class E license, including a learner's permit, is $48.00, a commercial driver's license (Class A) is $75.00, and an ID Card fee is $25.00.

For a complete list of driver's license fees, click here.

Applicants with a current or previous driver's license from another state, country, or jurisdiction need not take the Drug and Alcohol courses, Class E Knowledge exam, and Florida Driving tests.

However, the Vision and Hearing test is still a must!

You'll also need insurance to title and register your vehicle(s) within ten (10) days of establishing residency.

Meanwhile, if you have an existing Florida driver's license, notify the DMV of your new address for an updated driver's license — or else.

Raise your hands if you're still an unregistered voter in 2024!

Well, well, well — you better get that sorted and stat!

If you don't, you can kiss your right to be heard within Shenandoah bye-bye!

So, for those United States citizens over 18 who meet all the requirements for voter registration, submit your application with the proper IDs and documents through the Florida Department of State or the Miami-Dade County Elections Department online, by mail, or in person at the Elections Department or any Elections Branch office!

To give you a heads up, any current and valid identification with a photograph and signature (e.g., Florida Driver's License, United States passport, etc.) will be accepted!

Preserving Nature In Urban Miami: Your Contribution To Shenandoah's Sustainability

Shenandoah, in cooperation with other Miami communities, stands behind Miami's initiatives towards sustainability.

In fact, you've probably already noticed this as soon as you entered Shenandoah, with its spotless streets, well-maintained landscapes, green public spaces, and all.

So, to support the effort that the local governance and Shenandoah community have put into its environmental health, do your role as a resident by familiarizing yourself with the neighborhood's rules and regulations, including the established recycling and waste collection guidelines.

To give you an idea, here's the current solid waste, "bulky" garbage, and recyclables schedules:

  • Garbage & Trash collection (twice a week)
  • Free recycling collection every other week
  • "Bulky" trash collection (once a week)

Failure to follow these waste management codes will result in a $500 fine or arrest.

For more information about schedules and fees, visit the City of Miami Solid Waste Department website.
