Sitting in the heart of northwest Dade, on a large prairie between Biscayne Bay and the Everglades, is the thriving industrial city of Hialeah, a robust, family-centered neighborhood known as "The City of Progress!"

Named the sixth-largest city in Florida, with its street grid numbered separately from the rest of Miami-Dade County, Hialeah boasts a central location with easy access to EVERY major thoroughfare, including Opa-Locka Airport and Miami International Airport, making the suburban city a focal point for premium city conveniences and business opportunities — and anyone set on living near the Metro on a budget!

As the city pairs its distinct assets with a collection of affordable real estate, Hialeah has become one of Miami's select neighborhoods for families and career-driven residents alike, where an ECONOMICAL Metro Miami lifestyle is achievable despite its advantageous location on the map — physically and career-wise!

So, if you're contemplating moving to Hialeah or have already taken the steps to make this thriving city your HOME, congratulations on your well-informed decision!

Now it's time to make this transition as smooth and enjoyable as possible, and I'm here to guide you through the process in any and every way that I can!

Here are 7 things you need to do IMMEDIATELY when moving to Hialeah.

(1)

Igniting Your Hialeah Journey: The Fundamentals Of A Hialeah Home

Congratulations on putting a foot forward towards your goal of living in the "thick" of progress!

Now that you've secured a coveted spot in the community of Hialeah, it's time to ignite your journey by taking care of the basics, which ultimately means setting up the big THREE — your electricity, water, and gas services!

And I know how you can do it as stress-free and fuss-free as possible!

For your electricity, create or log in to your existing account at the Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) website and apply for service at your Hialeah address, new or otherwise.

If it's a new account, you'll need to submit your Social Security, Driver's License, Social Insurance, or Tax ID number, the new service address, and the connection date, but for existing FPL customers,  the disconnection date (old address), re-connection date,  and complete service address will suffice.

A deposit of $25 (minimum) and other initial set-up fees may be charged upfront, whether you're a new or existing customer.

Second, check with TECO Peoples Gas or Florida City Gas (FCG) for natural gas services.

After confirming availability, you may submit the necessary IDs and connection date (new customer) or advise the disconnection date, the complete address of your new home, and your preferred service transfer date (existing customer).

Your deposit fees may be based on the home's square footage or equal to twice the average monthly bill, and you may need to settle a connection fee before the service connection.

To round up your errands, check for water and sewer availability at your new address on the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer website.

Once confirmed, new customers must create an online account and deposit $50 for water, $50 for sewer, and a non-refundable $45 connection fee, and existing owners must also settle any outstanding balance before service transfer.

Gearing Up For Success: The "Connections" You Need To Thrive In A Progressive City

Imagine living inside your home sans any internet connection or something to watch on your brand-new Smart TV.

Yes, just as I thought — it'll be a nightmare!

So, before your expected move-in date, arrange for reliable internet and cable services at your Hialeah home!

To give you an idea of where to look for bundles, try visiting the websites of Comcast Xfinity and AT&T for their newest promos!

Once you've settled on a provider and package, apply for a new service by submitting your complete address and proper IDs online or in person at the nearest store, or if you're an existing Comcast or AT&T customer, request for a service transfer as soon as you settle any remaining balance on your account!

While you're at it, check with your provider if you need to settle deposits, activation/installation, and equipment rental fees upfront.

Otherwise, don't be surprised if it reflects on your first bill!

Meandering The Roads Of Florida: Your Key To A Full Hialeah Transition

Celebrating your BIG Hialeah move with a good old road trip around Florida?

Hold that thought — you'll need a Florida driver's license first!

Not only is it a REQUIREMENT within 30 days of establishing residency, but a Florida driver's license is also your "thumbs-up" to drive on all Florida roads and the quickest Florida identification to secure!

To apply for one, visit the nearest Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or any local office offering driver's license services and submit the necessary documents.

Click on the applicable residency status to know which documents to have on hand when you apply:

To give you an idea, the initial Florida Class E license, including a learner's permit, is $48.00, a commercial driver's license (Class A) is $75.00, and an ID Card fee is $25.00.

For a complete list of driver's license fees, click here.

If you have a current or previous driver's license from another state, country, or jurisdiction, the Drug and Alcohol courses, Class E Knowledge exam, and Florida Driving test may not be mandatory, yet the Vision and Hearing test is still a must!

Also, don't forget to get insurance to title and register your vehicle(s) within ten (10) days of establishing residency!

Meanwhile, those with existing Florida driver's licenses will have to notify the DMV of their new address for an updated driver's license, or they'll be breaking the law!

Embracing Premium Education: The Ins And Outs Of Hialeah's Educational Opportunities

Families moving to Hialeah will be happy to know that premium education is not just a bonus in this community but a lifestyle!

In fact, thanks to its ideal location near Metro Miami, Hialeah boasts a plethora of top Miami schools and proximity to a few in its neighboring communities!

Need a push in the right direction?

You have schools like Hialeah Gardens Elementary School, Ernest R. Graham K-8 Academy, Mater Academy Elementary School, North Twin Lakes Elementary School, Lincoln-Marti Charter Schools - Hialeah Campus, Palm Springs Middle School, and Youth Co-Op Preparatory Charter School — and there's more where that came from!

We're talking about public, charter, and private schools from elementary to senior high school!

Climbing The Ladder Of Progress: Becoming A Registered Voter In Hialeah

If you're moving to "The City of Progress" and still an unregistered voter, you've got some serious thinking to do!

You can't be part of the "progress" without having a voice within the community, agree?

So, if you're over 18, a United States citizen who meets all the requirements, and set on helping your new home flourish, submit your application with the proper IDs and documents through the Florida Department of State or the Miami-Dade County Elections Department online, by mail, or in person at the Elections Department or any Elections Branch office!

Current and valid identifications with a photograph and signature (e.g., Florida Driver's License, United States passport, etc.) will suffice, so be sure to make it a priority as soon as you move into Hialeah!

Pairing Progress With Sustainability: A Cleaner And Greener Hialeah

Being Miami's "City of Progress," Hialeah looks after and preserves more than just its commercial district!

In fact, to be called a progressive neighborhood, other factors need to be considered, including cleanliness, security, livability, and sustainability!

So, as a new member eager to be part of and contribute to the welfare of your new community, it's high time you familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations of Hialeah, most especially its recycling and waste management programs headed by both the City of Hialeah Department of Public Works and the City of Miami Solid Waste Department!

Here are the current solid waste, "bulky" garbage, and recyclables schedules:

  • Residential Garbage collection (twice a week)
  • Recycling collection (twice a month)
  • "Bulky" trash collection (once a month)

Failure to follow these waste management codes will result in a fine or arrest.

For more information about schedules and fees, visit Hialeah's Solid Waste & Recycling Services and the City of Miami Solid Waste Department website.
