Savor the tranquility of Biscayne Bay amidst eclectic urban offerings in Edgewater, a scenic residential paradise revered as a PIONEER in blending Miami's vibrant Metro culture with waterfront leisure!

Welcome to the tiny coastal slice of Edgewater, a mainland Miami community covering 1.68 square miles between Downtown Miami and the highly-sought-after Design District, a few miles south of the Intracoastal Waterway and proudly holding jurisdiction over Pace Picnic Island,

Albeit commonly grouped with the Arts District, Wynwood, Midtown, and the Design District, Edgewater assumes a distinct identity, pairing Miami's vibrant urban energy with serene, nature-oriented lifestyle by the water, alongside prime restaurants, entertainment hotspots, outdoor adventures, and an assortment of real estate from single-family homes, townhouses, duplexes, apartments, and waterfront condos.

Yes, folks, this up-and-coming neighborhood is slowly evolving into one of Miami's most coveted family-friendly districts, and if you're thinking of moving to this inviting waterfront residential community or among those who have already been caught by the "fever," know that you've made the RIGHT choice!

Now, it's just about slowly embracing a lifestyle merging Miami's urban culture with the serenity of waterfront living to bask in ENDLESS possibilities!

Here are 7 things you need to do IMMEDIATELY when moving to Edgewater.

(1)

The Essential Elements Of Waterfront Living: Taking Charge Of Your Utilities

Start your Edgewater journey STRONG by taking care of what matters most — well, at least when it comes to owning a home, and if you haven't already guessed by now, I'm talking about your water, electricity, and natural gas service.

In short, your ESSENTIAL utilities!

Ideally, you should sort these all out before you move in, but if you haven't yet, well, you won't need to break a sweat — all you need is one finger for clicking and a wallet full of your IDs!

For your electricity, create or log in to your existing account at the Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) website and apply for service at your new Downtown Miami address.

If you're a new customer, you'll need to submit your Social Security, Driver's License, Social Insurance, or Tax ID number, the new service address, and the connection date, or if you're already an existing FPL customer,  the disconnection date (old address), re-connection date,  and complete service address will suffice.

A deposit of $25 (minimum) and other initial set-up fees may be charged upfront, whether you're a new or existing customer.

Meanwhile, check with TECO Peoples Gas or Florida City Gas (FCG) for your natural gas services!

Once you've confirmed service availability, submit the necessary IDs and connection date (new customer) or advise the disconnection date, the complete address of your new home, and your preferred service transfer date (existing customer).

Note that deposit fees may be based on your home's square footage or equal to twice the average monthly bill, and you may need to settle a connection fee before service connection.

Lastly, check for water and sewer availability at your new address on the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer website.

New customers must create an online account and deposit $50 for water, $50 for sewer, and a non-refundable $45 connection fee, and existing owners must also settle any outstanding balance before service transfer.

Transcending Distances: Tending To Your Edgewater Cable And Internet Services

Are you ready to make that Edgewater house a HOME?

While decor, a bit of interior design, and incorporating your style can get the ball rolling, reliable internet and cable services will surely seal the deal — and I know just how to get them!

So, for the best internet-cable bundles in Edgewater (or across Florida), look to service providers like Comcast Xfinity and AT&T!

Once you've picked a provider and your preferred bundle, apply for new service by submitting your complete address and proper IDs online or in person at the nearest store, or if you're an existing Comcast or AT&T customer, request for a service transfer as soon as you settle any remaining balance on your account!

Aside from your application, you may have to settle deposits, activation/installation, and equipment rental fees upfront, or you may see them on the first bill.

Assuming A Floridian Identity: Exploring Florida Roads — The Legal Way

Are you leaving your "past" to jump on the Floridian way of living?

Don't forget to grab a Florida driver's license while you're at it — especially if you're coming from another country or state!

Not only is a Florida driver's license the quickest ID to secure (helpful if you need to set up your home and a few services), but it's also a REQUIREMENT within 30 days of establishing residency and your free pass to driving on Florida roads without the law enforcement in your tail!

To apply, visit the nearest Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or any local office offering driver's license services and submit the necessary documents.

Click on the applicable residency status to know which documents to have on hand when you apply:

The initial Florida Class E license, including a learner's permit, is $48.00, a commercial driver's license (Class A) is $75.00, and an ID Card fee is $25.00.

For a complete list of driver's license fees, click here.

Drivers with current or previous driver's licenses from another state, country, or jurisdiction may be allowed to forego mandatory Drug and Alcohol courses, the Class E Knowledge exam, and the Florida Driving test, but the Vision and Hearing test is still a MUST.

But if you already have an existing Florida driver's license, you'll still need to notify the DMV of your new address to get an updated driver's license and avoid any trouble while on the road!

To top it off, get insurance to title and register your vehicle(s), too, within ten (10) days of establishing residency if remaining scot-free is your goal!

Your Role In A Brighter Edgewater Future: The Road To Becoming An Eligible Voter

Still wandering through life as an unregistered voter?

Don't let yourself get caught without a voter's registration before your BIG Edgewater move — it's the only KEY you'll need to have a "say" in your new home's FUTURE!

Legal-aged United States citizens who meet all the requirements can submit their applications with the proper IDs and documents through the Florida Department of State or the Miami-Dade County Elections Department online, by mail, or in person at the Elections Department or any Elections Branch office!

Current and valid identifications with a photograph and signature (e.g., Florida Driver's License, United States passport, etc.) will be enough for approval!

E for Environment: Safeguarding Edgewater's Beauty

Embracing a new lifestyle also means considering, following, and keeping to heart your new city's rules and regulations, including the established waste collection and management efforts!

So, after settling into your Edgewater home, do your duty as a new Edgewater citizen by familiarizing yourself with your neighborhood's trash, solid waste, and recycling schedules!

It's the BEST and the ONLY way to safeguard Edgewater's cleanliness, beauty, and esteemed reputation!

For starters, check out the current solid waste, "bulky" garbage, and recyclables schedules:

  • Garbage & trash collection (twice a week)
  • Free recycling collection every other week
  • "Bulky" trash collection (once a week)

Failure to follow these waste management codes will result in a $500 fine or arrest.

For more information about schedules and fees, visit the City of Miami Solid Waste Department website.
